IMPORTANT NOTICE: Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation 2019 Scholarship Deadlines

The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation (ODKF) was created to support the development and growth of individual athletes and teams that compete in local, national, and international athletic competitions. As a tribute to Olympic swimmer and gold medal winner, Duke Kahanamoku, our scholarships are awarded to competitors in “Duke’s Sports” – surfing, sailing, swimming, diving, canoeing, water polo, kayaking and volleyball. Please take a moment to peruse our website at www.dukefoundation.org to find out more about ODKF. We hope that our foundation can help a student athlete in your school who would like to pursue a college education next fall.

2019 Scholarship Deadlines

November 24, 2019 - Duke Award Scholarship Submission Deadline.
Each Hawaii high school is invited to nominate up to three outstanding graduating seniors for this $25,000 scholarship. Additional information about this unique scholarship is attached. Please note that this is a one-year scholarship, though our winners are encouraged to apply for ODKF Scholarships annually and will be given preferential treatment in the awarding process. To nominate a student, send your student’s name, email, “Duke’s Sport,” and a brief statement about why he or she should be nominated to info@dukefoundation.org. Once this information is received, we will email your nominees a private link to the online application.

November 24, 2019 - Ambassador of Aloha Scholarship Deadline.
General Ambassador of Aloha scholarships are open to student athletes currently competing in water sports or volleyball, who intend to compete in sports in college, have a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher, and are involved in community service. Please direct your students to our website at www.dukefoundation.org. They may submit their online application via the link to the General Scholarship Application. Scholarship sizes vary depending on budget and applicant pool.

NOTE: Scholarships will be awarded by June of 2020 for credit towards the academic year 2020–2021.

THE DUKE AWARD SCHOLARSHIP QUALIFICATIONS


The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation (“ODKF”) established the Duke Award scholarship to honor the legacy of Duke Kahanamoku and reward ONE outstanding college-bound Hawaii high school senior who embodies the spirit and character that made Duke such a beloved figure in Hawaii and around the world, particularly as Hawaii’s Ambassador of Aloha. Qualifications for the award include academic success with the requirement to attend college; athletic excellence in water sports or volleyball; leadership; having a “Hawaiian heart;” and service to the community. Each high school is asked to nominate up to three students that meets these qualifications.

Nominations should be submitted via email to info@dukefoundation.org and should include nominating school, contact name and contact information, as well and the student’s name and contact information, and the “Duke Sport” he or she participates in. The school’s nominator should tell the student that they are being nominated for this scholarship. Once the foundation has confirmed receipt of their nomination, the foundation will email the students a link to fill out the scholarship application for the Duke Award. When filling out the application, students will be required to submit the following:

  1. Personal statement answering specific questions
  2. Athletic resume
  3. Individual photo
  4. Three letters of recommendation (one each for athletic achievements, academic performance, and community service)
  5. Academic transcript (3.0 + GPA)
  6. Page one and two of their parent(s)' most recent federal tax return*
*While financial need is not a qualifying factor for this scholarship, all applicants to the Duke Award Scholarship will also be considered for ODKF's general Ambassador of Aloha scholarships for which financial need is considered.

The scholarship committee comprised of ODKF board members reviews the written applications submitted by nominees, from which a group of 4-6 finalists are selected and personally interviewed by the committee to determine the winner. ODKF pays for travel expenses to fly in candidates from the Neighbor Islands for interviews.

All non-winning Duke Award finalists and applicants are included in the Ambassador of Aloha general pool of
college scholarship applications that are reviewed annually by ODKF’s scholarship committee. The Duke Award

All scholarship recipients will be invited to be featured at Duke’s Night, a community celebration on April17 , 2020 in Honolulu; the Duke Award Scholarship winner will be announced live at Duke’s Night.
