(Honolulu, Hawai‘i) – Despite there not being a 2021 high school wrestling state championship, long-time title sponsor and high school supporter Island Energy Services, the exclusive licensee of the Texaco brand in Hawaii, has pledged its continued support of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association in the face of the ongoing pandemic.
“Words cannot express our gratitude of our community partners who continue to support high school athletics regardless of sporting events being cancelled,” said HHSAA Executive Director Chris Chun. “This pandemic is only temporary, but as soon as it is deemed safe and we get the green light to proceed, we intend to go full-speed with our activities.”
Majority of the HHSAA’s state events do not generate revenue, therefore private funding is crucial to HHSAA operations and benefits all programs across the board.
“HHSAA plays a critical role in the development of many local youth and the greater community in general. Island Energy is committed to assisting HHSAA achieve its goals to enable opportunities for Hawaii’s student-athletes and potential future leaders. We are proud of our long-standing relationship supporting this worthwhile organization and look forward to HHSAA restarting activities when deemed safe to do so,” said Albert Chee, Island Energy Services Vice President, Retail and Community Relations.
The HHSAA announced earlier this month that its forgoing the March 2021 state championships under their modified calendar, affecting air riflery, basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, outrigger canoe paddling, soccer, swimming and diving and wrestling, which were all slated to begin January 4, 2021. The decision was based on several factors, including, but not limited to, travel restrictions and that leagues were already conducting shortened seasons.
The remaining sports scheduled March-May include baseball, football, golf, judo, softball tennis, track and field, water polo, volleyball.
