HONOLULU – The Hawaii High School Athletic Association will be conducting a football statisticians’ workshop, Saturday, July 30, 9:00 am-12:00 pm at the OIA Office located at Radford High School.
The three-hour workshop, led by sports information expert Thomas Yoshida, will go over the basic football stats and terms and how it is applied to the game. Participants will track an actual game and be provided with stat sheets to track key players.

We are just weeks away from the Hawaii high school football season and if you are a statistician, or seeking to become one, then the HHSAA football statisticians’ workshop is where you need to be. Whether it is a refresher, or you really need to know the Xs and Os of proper ball spotting and stats taking, this workshop will teach the basics as well as advance techniques to getting the numbers right.
In this workshop, you will learn the basic football stats and terms and how it applies to the game. You will also track an actual game and be provided with stat sheets to track the key players.
If you are a statistician for a high school or youth team, an aspiring sports journalist, or looking to pick-up a side-hustle, this course will help you understand why sports statistics is a vital to college recruiting.
Instructor:
Thomas Yoshida has been a football statistician for nearly 45 years. He began his career as a student statistician at Leilehua High School under coach Hugh Yoshida in 1979. After graduation from high school, he moved to University of Hawaii Athletics where he worked in sports information as a student and later as the full-time assistant director. He currently works with the HHSAA, Spectrum OC16 and on the UH football telecast as lead statistician and has compiled stats for the official HHSAA football and basketball record books.
