Haliniak Named HHSAA Information Director

HONOLULU – The Hawaii High School Athletic Association has appointed long-time athletic administrator Hoku Haliniak as director of information beginning in September.

“Hoku brings a wide-range of experience to the HHSAA, from serving as a coach to athletic director in three leagues within our state,” said Executive Director Chris Chun. “She has cultivated many relationships in the high school community and will make an immediate impact as our media relations liaison.”

A native of Honolulu, Haliniak will wear multiple hats for the organization, coordinating the media relations for the HHSAA’s 44 state championship tournaments in addition to administrative support. Haliniak knows first-hand the challenges athletic departments face, especially when travel is involved. Haliniak oversaw one of the most financially-challenged athletic programs in Hawaii with two years as Molokai High School’s athletic director. All road games involved travel by ferry, ground transportation and, at times, by propeller airplane.

Aside from her high school experience, Haliniak also served six years as assistant sports information director and intramural coordinator for University of Hawaii–Hilo. More recently, she has played a vital role in HHSAA state tournament game operations as an assistant coordinator and chief statistician for the past several years.

Haliniak earned a B.A. in communications from the University of Hawaii–Hilo and her M.A. in education from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She has USA Volleyball officiating and coaching certification and is also a certified athletic administrator through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrative Association.
