Isaac Shim stroked a two-run single with two outs and two strikes in the top of the seventh inning Monday night to lift Pearl City to a 2-1 victory and its first Wally Yonamine Baseball State Championship.
A crowd of 2,270 at Les Murakami Stadium watched the Chargers finish the regular and postseason at 14-5. Na Menehune, who also were seeking their first state title, ended up at 15-2-1.
Moanalua broke a scoreless pitching duel between its own Regan Lum and Pearl City’s Chevas Numata in the top of the sixth inning, when Bronson Shim singled with two outs and scored on Kamalu Kamoku’s double to left-center field.
In the bottom of the seventh, pinch-hitter Kyle Tom singled with one out and Sean Milan – who re-entered the game to run at first base – advanced to third on freshman Tanner Tokunaga’s two-out, two-strike double down the left field line.
That brought Shim to the plate, and he drew a 2-2 count before lining a single up the middle and into center field, scoring Milan and then Tokunaga.
Numata then retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh with two strikeouts and a fly ball to right field to complete a four-hitter with six strikeouts.
Shim and Tokunaga each finished 2 for 3.
