Makoa Camanse-Stevens completed 17 of 28 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns Thursday night as Kamehameha knocked off Punahou, 42-27, in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu finale at Hawaiian Airlines Field.
The Warriors finished the season at 7-3 overall, 5-2 in the ILH. Punahou, which had already clinched the league title last week and rested many of its starters, fell to 7-2, 6-1.
"It means the world to me, I love this school, I love my teammates," said Kamehameha senior receiver/running back Ali'i Pedrina, who rushed for 72 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries and added 74 yards and two TDs on four catches. "Gotta go out out with a bang, do it for the seniors. We wanted to end this season strong, build a legacy for next season. We have a lot of young guys out there."
Kamehameha jumped out to a 21-0 lead after Kaulana Apelu's 7-yard touchdown run with 4:07 remaining in the second quarter, before the Buffanblu cut it to 21-7 on Luke Morris' 6-yard TD pass to Noah Willey and Charles McDonald's extra point with 40 seconds left.
The Warriors extended the lead to 28-7 after Camanse-Stevens' 25-yard scoring pass to Nephi Stephens with 4:49 remaining in the third quarter, but Punahou answered with a 19-yard touchdown throw from Morris to Willey with 35 seconds left to make it 28-13. The PAT attempt failed.
Kamehameha struck back quickly with a 58-yard scoring pass play from Camanse-Stevens to Pedrina 12 seconds into the fourth quarter, and TJ Fitzsimmons' extra point made it 35-13. But the Buffanblu again responded quickly, as Heisman Hosoda's 27-yard kickoff return set up a 58-yard pass from Morris to Trent Sitar, and Morris connected with Willey from one yard out for their third TD. McDonald's PAT cut it to 35-20 with 11:07 still to play, and Punahou later closed to 35-27 after Morris' 7-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Cunningham with 6:12 remaining.
But the Buffanblu lost the ball on downs at their own 13-yard line on their next possession, and Pedrina scored on a 1-yard plunge to help push the lead to 42-27 with 1:47 left. Chad Souza then sealed the victory with an interception 20 seconds later.
Apelu, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound sophomore, finished with 73 yards on 11 carries before leaving the game with an injury on the first series of the second half.
"We just talked about starting a new legacy and just carrying on for seasons to come," Apelu said.
