HHSAA Division II GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Mules def. Ka Makani in five sets

The momentum continues for Leilehua. In five sets, the Oahu Interscholastic Association member defeated number four seed Hawaii Prep of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation this Thursday, October 28th to advance into the semifinals of the New City Nissan / HHSAA Division II Girls Volleyball Championships held at McKinley Student Council Gym in Honolulu.
Trailing for most of the final set, Leilehua had to fight its way back into contention through skillful performances by Krystin Kubo and Samantha Talaeai. Leilehua got off to a fast start in the final set then midway struggled to stay even. Eventually Leilehua managed to force Hawaii Prep into making errors to win the set, 17-15.

Leilehua won the first set, 26-24, and the third set, 25-23, to improve
its record to 13-4. The Mules will play in the semifinals match on
Friday, October 29th at 7 p.m. at McKinley.
Hawaii Prep won the second set, 25-22, and the fourth set, 25-9. The
loss was the team’s first defeat this season in 14 games. They will
continue play in the consolation bracket of the tournament.
“We came together as one at the end,” Kubo said after the match. “This
was a tough battle for us, but we were ready to play today. I think at
the end we out-hustled them. And that determination helped us win.”
Talaeai said her motivation was that she was not ready to stop playing high school volleyball.
“I knew if we lost that our season would be over. I just wanted to
continue playing in this tournament and win as many games as we can,”

Very few freshman in any sport can carry their team in crunch time.
Count Leilehua’s Ashlee Vaoifi as one of them.
Vaoifi had 26 kills, including nine in the fifth set, as Leilehua defeated No. 4 seed Hawaii Prep, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 9-25, 17-15, in a quarterfinal match at McKinley.
The Mules looked down and out after being drubbed in the fourth set, but they quickly recovered.
The fifth had 11 ties and six lead changes. Ka Makani had match point at 14-12, but Kayla Kilaulani’s kills and Samantha Talaeai’s ace on the back line tied it. A service error by Kilaulani gave Hawaii Prep another match point, but a kill by Vaoifi, ace by Tatiana Alailima and another kill by Vaoifi won it for Leilehua.
Talaeai added 11 kills for Leilehua (13-4).
Hawaii Prep was led by Leeta Grap, who had 19 kills.
The Mules scored the final four points to pull out a first set that had eight ties and six lead changes. Leilehua’s set-ending run included a hitting error and kills by Talaeai, Vaoifi and Kilaulani.
In the second set, Hawaii Prep (13-1) led by five points on four occasions before Leilehua got close in the end. A hitting error got Leilehua within 22-21, but a Mules’ service error and kill by Grap got Hawaii Prep to set point. After a kill by Leilehua’s Talaeai, Lana Queen won it for Ka Makani with kill.
Leilehua jumped to a 5-0 lead in the third, but was caught at 22-22 after two consecutive hitting errors. A hitting error by Hawaii Prep and service error by Leilehua tied it before a kill by the
Mules’ Krystin Kubo and hitting error on Ka Makani ended it.
The fourth set was no contest. Grap had seven kills in the set for Hawaii Prep, and Ka Makani had four blocks in the set.
The Mules substituted freely when things started to get out of hand. Leilehua also lost points when it called a timeout it didn’t have and committed a rotation violation.
