HHSAA Division II GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Top-seeded University rallies past Kalaheo, 3-1

Top seeded University High put on a
magnificent performance this Thursday, October 28th to win its matchup
against Kalaheo and advanced into the semifinals of the New City
Nissan/HHSAA Division II Girls Volleyball Championships at McKinley’s
Student Council Gym in Honolulu.
The Interscholastic League of
Honolulu member took three of four sets in the match to improve to 15-3.
The Jr. ‘Bows will return to McKinley this Friday, October 29th to
compete in the semifinals match against Oahu Interscholastic Association
member Leilehua in the 7:00 p.m. nightcap.

University lost the first set, 26-24, but won the next three by the scores of 25-21, 25-13 and 25-9. Kainoa Ocasek and Quynne Eharis each had 15 kills for University High. Teammate Kaena Kaina recorded 12 kills. Kalaheo, also an OIA member, dropped to 13-4. They will play in the consolation bracket in the 5:00 p.m. match at McKinley. “Playing in a strong league helps us develop our skills because every match we play against some of the best girls volleyball players in Hawaii,” Ocasek said. “But playing in this tournament is different. Every team wants to win. For our team we have to continue playing the best as we can as a team.” Division II Results »

University High let the first set get away against Kalaheo, then barely pulled out the second.
The Junior Rainbows then found their groove.
Quynne Eharis and Kainoa Ocasek both had 15 kills as No. 1 seed University High beat Kalaheo, 25-27, 25-21, 25-13, 25-9, in a quarterfinal match at McKinley.
University High (15-3) led the first set 24-22, but consecutive kills by Jowell Guerreiro tied it. Eharis’ kill gave the Junior Rainbows another set point, but Guerreiro got another kill to tie it at 25-25. A hitting error and kill by Guerreiro – her eighth of the set – won it for the Mustangs.
In the second set, University High led 23-17 before Kalaheo (13-4) rallied again. The Mustangs scored the next three before the teams traded points the rest of the way. Michelle Fainberg put down set point for University High.
The Junior Rainbows dominated thereafter.
In the third, Kaena Kaina had four kills, while Fainberg, Eharis and Ocasek each added three. Kalaheo committed six hitting errors and tallied only five kills in the set.
In the fourth, Mikayla Samiano had three aces and Ocasek had five kills for University High.
Guerreiro finished with 18 kills for Kalaheo.
