HONOLULU — In what's probably the most competitive boys air riflery state tournament in its eight-year history, the Punahou boys air riflery team captured the HHSAA state crown by a mere two points ahead of runner-up and defending state champion Waiakea at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
Senior Scott Hong led the way for the Buffanblu with 529 points and a tie for first in the individual championship, but lost in the tie breaker to take second overall. Mid Pacific junior Jordan Muratsuchi was declared the individual champion by winning the tie-breaker — the last 10 shots in kneeling competition.
The boys individual championship was in reach for each of the top ten finishers. The difference between first and tenth was a matter of nine points.
The girls individual championship was also competitive. Pearl City senior Jolana Gollero claimed the individual championship with a score of 527, just three points more than runner-up Lindsey Miho of Punahou School.
The Sacred Hearts girls air riflery team captured their fifth state championship in eight years. The Lancers were lead by Mai Oseto, who scored 522 total points and placed fourth in the individual championships. Samantha Niver placed seventh (517), Jenna Wojcik placed ninth (514) and Danielle Pontes placed 14th (508).
"I'm honored to be apart of that winning tradition," said first-year head coach Alan Tokumura. "This year, the girls were very focused on making and winning states. The next goal for them is to qualify and make nationals."
