HHSAA Division II BOYS BASKETBALL: Farrington stuns Aiea to capture the DII crown in overtime
Farrington senior Christian Hernandez scored 27 points to help lift the Governors over top-seeded Aiea and in the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Division II Boys Basketball State Championship Saturday night at Neal Blaisdell Arena.
This marked the third meeting this season between the teams. Early in the OIA white regular season Aiea defeated Farrington, 48-44. The teams met again in the OIA white championship, but again Aiea was victorious, 54-49. But the Governors refused to make it three in a row.
With five seconds remaining in regulation, the Govs rebounded a missed Aiea free throw, outlet the ball to a breaking Hernandez, who shot the ball off the dribble from beyond the arc to send the game into overtime.
The Na Alii and the Govs made it a see-saw affair with seven ties and nine lead changes. But Governor’s Jordan Ibana sealed the deal with a layup with 11 seconds remaining in overtime to end the game at 70-68.
Aiea’s Obie Woods scored 26 points while Aldodius Colquitt grabbed 11 boards.
