UH Sports Media RelationsTwo-time defending state champion Punahou successfully opened defense of its title with a 62-37 opening round victory over Farrington, Tuesday, in the Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Division I Girls Basketball Championship at the Stan
Sheriff Center.
The Buffanblu (10-5), winners of three of the last four state championships, led by 15 at the half and 19 after three quarters. Punahou's full-court, trapping defense forced 25 Lady Governor turnovers and held Farrington to 27 percent shooting after intermission.
Tressa Torres led Punahou with 14 points. Valerie Lesu led the Lady Govs with 11 points.
The Buffanblu will next face fourth-seeded Lahainaluna in a quarterfinal round game on Wednesday.
