UH Sports Media RelationsKonawaena claimed the 2007 Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Division I Girls Basketball Championship with a 59-47 win over Punahou Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Wildcats led from start to finish to dethrone the two-time defending champion Buffanblu and cap an undefeated season (17-0).
Mana Hopkins led three Wildcats in double figures with a game-high 26 points. Jazzmin Awa-Williams poured in 15 points and Liana Hanato-Smith added 14 as Konawaena captured its second state title and first since 2003. Dara Tompkison led Punahou with 10 points, while Chelsea Deptula added eight points and nine rebounds.
Konawaena never trailed in the game and took a 29-17 lead into the locker room. The Buffanblu rallied in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to just four points, but the Wildcats closed the door in the fourth and final quarter sealing the game with its final eight points from the free throw line.
